About Tumsifu SACCO
A Karen Community Church based SACCO, formed in 2013 to promote the social and economic well-being of Karen Community Church members.
Our history
Empowering members financially
Tumsifu SACCO was born out of a desire to provide a lasting solution to the financial challenges faced by members of Karen Community Church. Before its establishment, the Social Welfare Ministry spent every Thursday reviewing numerous requests for financial assistance from members experiencing financial hardship. While the church responded to these needs as much as possible, it became clear that there was an opportunity to empower members through saving, responsible borrowing and financial stewardship.
With this vision in mind, Mrs. Elizabeth Mbugua, a member of the Social Welfare Ministry, prepared a proposal to establish a Savings and Credit Cooperative. The proposal was presented to the Elders' Court and approved, paving the way for the official launch of Tumsifu SACCO on 13th November 2013, with an initial capital of KES 30,000.
The first leadership team comprised Mrs. Elizabeth Mbugua (Chairlady), Mr. Hudson Shiverenje (Vice Chairman), Ms. Apophia Kanyi (Treasurer), Mrs. Elizabeth Kimenyi (Secretary) and Mr. Lawrence Kimutai (Assistant Secretary). The SACCO continues to have robust governance by members who serve on a volunteer basis. Through their commitment and the support of the church, it has grown steadily into a trusted financial partner serving the congregation.
Today, Tumsifu SACCO has grown to approximately KES 12 million in assets and a membership of 152, with about 70% actively participating. More importantly, it has transformed lives by enabling members to meet their financial needs through savings and affordable loans rather than emergency welfare assistance. As a result, the number of financial aid requests made to the church has reduced significantly.
The SACCO remains accessible: joining requires a registration fee of KES 1,000, share capital of KES 2,000 and initial savings of KES 500, and members can access loans from as little as KES 5,000. When a member requests a loan and the requirements are in order, the loan is dispensed within one to two days. Over the years, Tumsifu SACCO has become a testament to the power of wise stewardship, mutual support, and a community committed to caring for one another in practical and sustainable ways.

Our church
Karen Community Church
Karen Community Church was planted in April 1996, when Nairobi Baptist Church commissioned a group of 18 people to start a new congregation in Karen. Its first worship and Sunday school services were held at the Kenya Commercial Bank Management Institute.
Today it is a congregation-led church serving children, teens and families. Its vision is to raise believers who know, love and present Christ as Lord: a place to belong and a place to become.
We are deeply grateful to the church, its Elders' Court and its Social Welfare Ministry, from which Tumsifu was born, and for the support that helps our members thrive together.
